Leo
July 23 – August 22 · fire · fixed · ruled by Sun
The sovereign, the performer, the heart. The principle of self-expression — the part of the psyche that wants to shine, to be seen, to bring its particular light into the room.
Sign summary
- Distorted expression
- Vanity, the need for the room's attention as a condition of feeling real, the performance that has substituted for presence, the king who has begun to require subjects.
- Refined expression
- Generous presence. The capacity to be fully oneself in plain view, to enjoy being seen without requiring it, and to let the warmth of one's own shining make others more visible rather than less.
- Key question
- Where am I being asked to be visible — not for praise, but because the room is worse off without my particular light in it?
The image
A lion. Large, calm, mane lit by sun. Not stalking — sitting. The body says, I am the one here. Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac, falling in high summer when the sun is heaviest. The energy is bright, warm, unmistakable, and easily wounded — Leo is fire that needs to be received in order to feel real.
The figure in the psyche
Leo is the principle of self-expression. After Cancer’s inward containment, Leo is what comes out into the world as a specific, visible person. Sun-ruled, the sign carries the central energy of the chart in concentrated form. Leo is the heart in the symbolic sense — the part of the psyche that wants to be in the room, to give what it has to give, to enjoy being itself.
Liz Greene reads Leo as the sign of the unique individual — not the assertive I of Aries, but the I-am-this-particular-person who wants the particularity to be witnessed. The performance instinct is here. The dignity of the self. The pride of being something specific rather than generic.
When the energy is present
You notice Leo in yourself in moments of full self-expression — the talk you give that goes well, the meal you host with care, the laugh in the room that everyone joins, the moment you stand up and the room finds itself listening. Leo is the warmth you bring. It is also, intimately, your capacity for play, generosity, and the simple joy of being a person rather than a role.
In refined form, Leo is the warm sovereign — the figure whose presence makes the room better for everyone in it, who can hold attention without needing it, who is generous because the warmth is real and abundant rather than performed.
In distorted form, Leo becomes the diva. The figure who requires the attention of the room as a condition of being okay. The vanity that has substituted for self-respect. The wounded pride that turns the room into a place of either worship or threat. Or, on the under-developed side, the Leo who has been told their light is too much and has dimmed themselves, becoming a person who cannot quite enter a room.
The work
If Leo is strong in you, the work is enjoying being seen without requiring it. The warmth is real. The risk is that the need for the room to confirm the warmth becomes the engine, and the engine never stops being hungry. Mature Leo is generous because the source is full, not because the audience is paying.
If Leo is weak in you, the work is visibility — building the capacity to be a particular person in plain sight, to take up the space that is yours, to enjoy your own shining without apologising for it. The room is worse off when the person who is supposed to be there has hidden themselves.
